After I install Ubuntu 10.04 , I found the new default theme has the Minimise, Maximise and Close buttons have been moved from the top right, to the top left.

It is very difficult for me to use these buttons on the left.

Now, How do I move the Minimise, Maximise and Close buttons Back to the Right  ?

To move now Press Alt+F2 , enter “gconf-editor” in the text field, and click on Run.

The Configuration Editor should pop up.

Click on the + button next to the “apps” folder, then Click “metacity” in the list of folders and then click on the “general” folder.

Double-click button_layout to edit it on the right side .

Change the text in the Value text field to:

    menu:minimize,maximize,close

Click OK and the change will occur immediately.

Now you will see the Minimise, Maximise and Close buttons have been moved to top right.

Now it is really good see the buttons back to top right, and after reading this you too feelto move the Minimise, Maximise and Close buttons back to the Right in Ubuntu 10.04 .

I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) in PC today and the outlook looks good. I was very much surprised that “GIMP” was missing in this release and then I tried to update Lucid Lynx.

verman@verman-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for verman:

Err http://security.ubuntu.com lucid-security Release.gpg
Something wicked happened resolving ‘security.ubuntu.com:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)
Err http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security/main Translation-en_IN
Something wicked happened resolving ‘security.ubuntu.com:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)

W: Failed to fetch http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid-updates/multiverse/source/Sources.gz  Something wicked happened resolving ‘in.archive.ubuntu.com:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

This Showed me a error “No address associated with hostname” in all the line.

Then I tried all the possibility to update  Lucid Lynx.

I was using Proxy Internet connect and  I didn’t touch any settings.

Proxy is working fine and able to browse all website in the Internet.

Then suspect it has nothing to do with proxy .

Even when i manually exported  HTTP proxy: http://myname:mypassword@proxy Port: 8080 , apt-get update was not working.

After a long search using my friend google, I found that we had to acquire http proxy in apt.conf file

Then I just added a line in /etc/apt/apt.conf

Acquire::http::Proxy “http://myname:mypassword@proxy:8080”;

after that it worked charm!

verman@verman-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for verman:

Ign http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Translation-en_IN

Hit http://security.ubuntu.com lucid-security/multiverse Packages

verman@verman-desktop:~$

Thanks to Google ……….

Now I will try installing “GIMP”

Installing Ubuntu 9.10 Step-by-step installation
tutorial with screenshots

Ubuntu 9.10, also known as the Karmic Koala, arrived exactly on October 29, 2009 and is the eleventh release of Ubuntu OS. We’ve created the following tutorial to teach Linux newcomers how to install the Ubuntu 9.10 operating system on their personal
computer. Therefore, it is addressed to people who have just heard about Ubuntu, those who have never installed Ubuntu before and want to test it, but don’t know how.

The tutorial will make things very simple for you, but if you get stuck somewhere in the middle of the installation and you need help, do not hesitate to use our commenting system at the end of the article!

Requirements:

You will need the Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop ISO image that corresponds to your hardware architecture (i386 or amd64), and which can be downloaded from here. When the download is over, burn the ISO image with your favorite CD/DVD burning application (Nero, CDBurnerXP, Roxio) on a blank CD at 8x speed.

Reinsert or leave the CD in your CD/DVD-ROM device and reboot the computer in order to boot from the CD. Hit the F8, F11 or F12 key (depending on your BIOS) to select the CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device.

I received a comment on my post “How to play YouTube Video in Ubuntu 9.04?” from jaleshd@gmail.com on August 26, 2009.

The Comment was –
when i click on a video to view it, it says -‘could not open location. you may not have permission to open the file. ‘

Then I had doubt it could be due to the wireless network, because now a days most of the people started using Laptops rather than using a Desktop PC. Most of the laptops have In-build wireless, which makes people easy to access network where ever they go.

I had never received such a error because I was using wired Internet connection.

Then I started Google, relating to that of wireless network and then found it is a bug and it has been resolved.

just refer : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/323649

How did the problem solved ?

Download Patch to totem-plugins-2.26.1-0ubuntu5/youtube.py (565 bytes, text/plain) to desktop.

Copied the patch to /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube

$ cd /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube

$ sudo cp /home/user/Desktop/totem_plugins_youtube.py.patch .

Then patch the file youtube.py with totem_plugins_youtube.py.patch

$ sudo patch /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube/youtube.py totem_plugins_youtube.py.patch

Thus the patch fixes the error
”Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.” .

Now it works fine.

* I Thank all comments and credit for all my efforts to keep going.

There are a lot of tutorials out on “t3h 1nt3rw3bZ” that show various different filter effects in GIMP and specifically how to do cartoon-like effects. That said, none of the ones that I came across on my search, nay trek, bore visually pleasing fruit … at least not for me.

So, as I usually do when I’m waisting time when I should be marking student assignments or more importantly, spending time with my wife and new daughter, I decided to start playing in GIMP and after many failed attempts I came across what I deemed to be a sort of graphic art-like effect; it’s not necessarily cartoon-like, but it is cartoony and I liked the effect and decided to write it down.

Of course I realized that I would probably lose the sheet of paper I wrote these set of steps down onto and so decided that I would use Linus Torvalds’ philosophy which is:

“Only wimps use tape backup: real men just upload their important stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)”

This isn’t FTP, but it’s the same idea no doubt. 🙂

One of my friend was unable to mount a 250 GB external hard disk and the disk which has NTFS file system.

With help of my friend google, I found a driver called NTFS-3G which supports read/write NTFS driver for Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenSolaris, QNX, Haiku, and other operating systems.

it provides safe and fast handling of the Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 file systems.

The ntfs-3g packages comes pre-installed with the newest versions of Ubuntu, but you still need to install ntfs-config

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config (or) ntfs-3g

sudo mkdir /media/sdb1

sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

ls -la /media/sdb1

that’s it.

Now you can start 250 GB external hard disk and the disk which has NTFS file system.

Today I received a mail with a file attachment and the file extension was .docx.

.docx actually is a Microsoft word processor document and named OpenXML . Now .docx is by default format for Latest Microsoft word 2007.

Then I found very panic to open the file in Openoffice.

Now it is not a problem anymore to open .docx documents in any Linux distribution coming with OpenOffice suit.

With the help of my friend google I simply download (odf_filter.tar.bz2) import filter for OpenOffice to my home folder.

verman@verman-desktop:~$ sudo wget http://www.taufikraras.com/download/odf_filter.tar.bz2
[sudo] password for verman:

/home/verman

verman@verman-desktop:~$

verman@verman-desktop:~$ ls
nsmail.tmp
odf_filter.tar.bz2
opera-9.64
OperaDownloads

Then Untar the odf_filter.tar.bz2

verman@verman-desktop:~$ sudo tar -xvjf odf_filter.tar.bz2
files/
files/README.txt
files/MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu
files/MOOXTypeDetection.xcu
files/OdfConverter

verman@verman-desktop:~$ ls
nsmail.tmp
odf_filter.tar.bz2
opera-9.64
OperaDownloads
part.png
files

verman@verman-desktop:~$

Change the directory to files

verman@verman-desktop:~$ cd files/

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$

Copied OdfConverter to /usr/lib/openoffice/program/

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo cp OdfConverter /usr/lib/openoffice/program/
[sudo] password for verman:
verman@verman-desktop:~/files$

Created a folder TypeDetection in /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo mkdir /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection

Then Created a folder Filter in /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo mkdir /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter/

Then Copied MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu to /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter/

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo cp MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter/

Created a Folder Types in /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo mkdir /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types

Then Copied MOOXTypeDetection.xcu to /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types/

verman@verman-desktop:~/files$ sudo cp MOOXTypeDetection.xcu  /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types/
verman@verman-desktop:~/files$

Now open OpenOffice.org Word Processor

Click Applications > Office > OpenOffice.org Word Processor.

Then Press Ctrl+O to open and select Microsoft Word 2007 document (.docx) as the file type

That’s it .
