It’s installed by default in Ubuntu 9.04 and works fabulously!
Totem Movie Player now includes a plug-in for searching and playing You Tube videos without leaving the player and without Flash.
Click Applications > Sound & Video and select Movie Player (to play Totem Movie Player)
Then enable Youtube .
Click on Edit > Plugins (in Totem Movie Player)
place a check in the box labeled ‘YouTube browser‘ .
Click Close to save changes.
The You Tube browser runs in Totem’s sidebar.
If the sidebar isn’t open press F9 to enable Sidebar in Totem player.
Click the sidebar’s drop-down box to select the You Tube view.
It takes a minute for the plug-in to load search results.
When using the GStreamer backend, you can install multiple plug-in packages.
- gst-plugins-base
the basic and essential plug-ins for GStreamer - gst-plugins-good
the plug-ins for most Open formats - gst-plugins-ugly
good-quality plug-ins that might pose distribution problems, needed for DVD playback - gst-plugins-bad
a set of plug-ins that need more work, needed for YouTube videos - gst-ffmpeg
FFmpeg-based plug-in, contains all the basic decoders for popular codecs, such as DivX and WMV
After installing the appropriate plug-in you can enjoy playing You Tube Videos in your desktop.
You can download youtubeh264.tar.gz and install this plugin to watch youtube clips in h264 quality!
Thanks for this, it works. But I do not know how to install the h264 plugin.
Are there any updates for the desktop effects so it will run on all laptops?
You need to extract youtubeh264.tar.gz and copy the ‘youtubeh264’ to your totem plugins directory (usually it is /usr/lib/totem/plugins).
then
Click Applications > Sound & Video and select Movie Player (to play Totem Movie Player)
Then enable youtubeh264 .
Click on Edit > Plugins (in Totem Movie Player)
place a check in the box labeled ‘youtubeh264‘ .
Click Close to save changes.
that’s it.
Thanks, but it says permission is denied.
while you copy the folder, copy has a root user
verman@verman-desktop:/$ cd /usr/lib/totem/plugins
verman@verman-desktop:/usr/lib/totem/plugins$ sudo cp -r /home/verman/Desktop/youtubeh264 .
verman@verman-desktop:/usr/lib/totem/plugins$ ls -l
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-04-20 19:39 youtube
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-08-03 07:50 youtubeh264
and then enable youtubeh264 .
Click on Edit > Plugins (in Totem Movie Player)
place a check in the box labeled ‘youtubeh264‘ .
Click Close to save changes.
Hi friend,
I appreciate the way you do the bloging.
BTWthis is an issue referring to “playing youtube videos in Totem movieplayer 2.28.2 on Ubuntu 9.10”
I’ve unzipped youtubeh264.tar.gz to /usr/lib/totem/plugins
When I try to check the box which says YouTube H264 browser, it gives an error message saying,
“Unable to activate plugin YouTube H264”
Please help us to find the resolution.
Thanks again, but it does seem to take along time for it to find any video. Perhaps it is because I am on wireless. But I have it installed. Also the bbc plugin works great!
u have a good site. i have book marked it.
its telling me the same thing i need permissions i just want to see you tube and a few other free web sites i don’t want the h264 file how do i get permissions with out that
Sorry, I could not understand what you want to express to me.
Please illustrate what you need.
regards,
verman
when i click on a video to view it, it says -‘could not open location. you may not have permission to open the file. ‘
refer :
Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file – Totem Movie Player
Same here – Permission denied when I try to view a video. Shame it looked like it could have been a good idea, but without permissions (Where ever they are meant to be) its as useless as all the other “Fixes” to view YouTube in Linux.
when i open movie player and try to watch youtube in it i get this………message (“An error occurred”) (“Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.”)
what should i do to allow permissions to watch youtube???????????????
cause gnush doesnt work that well
I never had a such a problem in my PC.
Are you using a wireless network ? if so,
just refer : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/323649

So, is that a kind of bug or what? TY.
You don’t appear to be running an actual gnome session nor do you have the gnome-settings-daemon package installed, am I correct? If you don’t have the settings-daemon running then such an error would be expected.
Lo.
Can you post a simple, clear, step by step set of instructions for us noobs who are new to the whole Linux thing?

msverman you are Da Man! The link above you put
just refer : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/323649
has a patch that fixes
”Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.”
in totem! This is something that has been bothering me for a month or so. In Jaunty we got that error on every video but not now. THANK YOU!
In the bug link msverman referred, near the bottom of the page, there is a now a link to a patch file. Click on the link to download the patch file and save it to your Desktop.
Copy the patch file into the /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube directory like so:
sudo cp /home/rob/Desktop/totem_plugins_youtube.py.patch /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube/.
In the patch file, which is a text file, is the exact line you need to run to fix the problem. Well, it worked for me anyway.
i did this time!
you see i clicked on that link before but it would promote me to save file, it’s opens inside the browser and on first time i thought that’s mistake. So this time i have created that file and copied code in it, then followed instructions in the file.
thanks for pointing that out =)
