For the past two year i had been using Ubuntu 7.10 and now i am switch over to ubuntu 9.04.
The screen looks very good but I love to work with Desktop Effects. So I decided to install compiz in my pc.
Installing Compiz in Ubuntu 9.04 is very easy when compare to Ubuntu 7.10.
Insert your Ubuntu 9.04 CD and switch on your DSL MODEM (Keep Internet in active state)
1. Click Applications and select Add/Remove (Install and remove applications)
2. From the left menu choose System Tools
3. Next from the right menu,
find and select for install: Desktop Effects (Compiz Setup)
and Nvidia binary X.org Driver version 173 or 177.
By selecting the driver you will get the list of supported graphics card.
4. Click Apply Changes and after installation go to System/Administration/Hardware Drivers
5. The system will search for available drivers and you can choose
the recommended option from the list to activate
the driver by clicking Activate button.
6. Next, restart your system and the new nVidia graphic display driver will be on use.
7. To enable the desktop effects on Ubuntu 9.04,
go to System/Preferences/Appearance and on the Visual Effects tab
choose Normal or Extra if you have never graphic system.
Run Compiz :
To run Compiz for the current session, hold Alt, then press F2, then enter the command
compiz –replace
Configure :
To configure Compiz and associated plugins, hold Alt, then press F2, then enter the command
ccsm

Hi hamzath.
Sorry ! I am unable to understand your queries.
You can download Ubuntu 9.04 from http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download (or) you can request a CD from https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
How you can set up an Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.
Available in http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-9.04
when i do this process like you told me to.
System/Administration/Hardware Drivers
THIS shows up. no proprietary drivers are in use on this system.
i don’t understand. can you please help.
check weather you have a Nivida graphics accelerator card in your PC.
If you don’t have just buy a Nivida graphics accelerator card and fit-it in your pc and install Compiz & Compiz Fusion plugins.
Thank you for these very clear and useful instruction. One question: I haven’t been able to configure Compiz because I get the following error message when running the “ccsm” command:
Error stating file ‘/home/ambiguo/ccsm’: No such file or directory
Any ideas?
install ccsm in your pc
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Thanx a lot for the info.
Works Perfectly on Macbook Pro Penryn (4,1)!
I installed it from running ubuntu (not from the CD).
Now this page is in my favourites.
And thank you for the shorcut launcher.
Since you seem to be a whiz, do you know how to get out of a man in terminal or console? I’m always stuck at END and have to open a new console or terminal tab to keep on learning…
Hi msverman
I have installed ubuntu 9.04 amd64 on my Acer 5536 laptop with ATI HD3200 graphic card.
Plz suggest how to run visual effects on this machine and also suggest how to install stuff on it via another desktop running on XP with Internet connection since i dont have net connection yet on my laptop.
Ubuntu seems to have installed ATI but i cant find ccsm in synaptics manager.
Thanx,
yaseen.
install the xorg-driver-fglrx package and all dependencies, via Synaptic.
Next step, opened a terminal and typed:
sudo aticonfig –initial -f
Finally reboot.
Compiz works fine .
I have never install ATI graphics card. I had taken the information from http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1133950.html
Sorry, I have no idea on XP.
regards,
verman
Thanx msverman,
I tried the above steps but it didnt work initially will try again l8r in day. BTW if we get NVidia drivers through applications–> system tools is it possible to have similar steps to get ATI cards’ drivers.
I did manage to install CCSM but its not worth till i can get my graphic card to work.
Plz advise if you can find some solution to this.
Regards,
yaseen.
Very well put! 9.04 Makes compiz loads easier but the instructions for the not so nixxy users have never been clear
This my friend, is the best clearcut straight forward install method ever verbalized in the compiz community! I wish I had awards to hand out lol Anyhow thanks again for the amazing tutorial! I like to show off compiz to alot of people and I like to be able to have it up and running in minutes or less!
